A spouse visa isn't a destination β€” it's the start of a five-year road to settlement, and then, if you want it, British citizenship.

Stage 1 β€” the initial visa (33 months)

You arrive on a 33-month spouse visa. During this time you can work and build your life, but you can't claim most benefits. Keep your evidence as you go.

Stage 2 β€” the extension (FLR-M, +30 months)

Before your first visa expires, you apply from inside the UK to extend for a further 30 months. You re-prove the core requirements: continuing genuine relationship, the financial requirement, and (if you didn't meet a higher level earlier) English at the next level up.

Stage 3 β€” settlement (ILR)

After five years of continuous residence as a partner, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. You'll also need to have passed the Life in the UK test and meet English at B1 level. Once ILR is granted, you're free of visa fees, renewals and the surcharge.

The continuous residence rule

ILR requires you not to have spent too long outside the UK. As a rule of thumb, keep absences modest and well within the limits across the five years; long or frequent trips can break continuity and reset the clock.

Stage 4 β€” British citizenship (optional)

Many people stop at ILR. If you want a British passport, you can usually apply for naturalisation. As the spouse of a British citizen, you can generally apply 12 months after getting ILR, provided you meet the residence, good-character and other requirements.

What it all costs

Across the journey, the Home Office fees come to roughly Β£12,400 per person, plus the tests. Citizenship is a separate fee on top if you choose it.

The thread that runs through it

Every stage re-tests the relationship and (until ILR) the finances, so the habits you build early β€” keeping joint documents, payslips and proof of living together β€” pay off again and again. Treat the five years as one continuous evidence trail.

Common questions

When can I apply for ILR?

After five years as a partner, with the Life in the UK test passed and B1 English.

How long after ILR can I get citizenship?

Usually 12 months, as the spouse of a British citizen.

Do absences abroad affect ILR?

Yes β€” keep them within the limits to preserve continuous residence.
