The Home Office has to be satisfied your relationship is genuine and subsisting β€” real and ongoing, not arranged for a visa. The legal test is 'more likely than not', so you're painting a clear, honest picture. The trouble is that genuine couples often document it badly.

Quality beats quantity

A common mistake is dumping 200 near-identical WhatsApp screenshots into the application. It doesn't help β€” it can even hurt, because it looks like padding. A smaller, well-chosen set of evidence that tells a believable story across time is far stronger.

The four pillars

  • Cohabitation β€” joint tenancy/mortgage, bills in both names, official post to the same address over time.
  • Shared finances β€” joint account, shared bills, money transfers, evidence you support each other.
  • Communication β€” a sample of messages and call logs spread across the relationship.
  • Time together β€” photos in different places and times, travel together, flights and hotel bookings.

Supporting letters

Two kinds help: a personal letter from each of you explaining how you met and your plans; and letters from people who know you as a couple confirming the relationship is real.

If you're not married

The unmarried partner route asks you to show roughly two years of living together. The same four pillars apply, but cohabitation evidence carries extra weight β€” documents in both names spanning the full two-year period.

Red flags to handle honestly

Big age gaps, short relationships, limited time spent physically together, or a language barrier aren't fatal β€” but they invite scrutiny. Address them head-on rather than leaving an obvious question unanswered.

A simple test

Before you submit, ask: if a stranger read only this bundle, would they believe two real people are building a life together?

Common questions

How many messages should I include?

A representative sample across time, not everything.

Do we need a joint account?

It helps but isn't mandatory if other evidence is strong.

Is meeting in person required?

Yes β€” you must have met.
